Today was another relatively short and uneventful day. I woke up a little earlier to get a head start on the heat, and I was on the road by 7 AM.
I spent the first 40 KM daydreaming as I glided along in the cool morning air, so it seemed to go by fast. During this time I saw a big owl hopping around on the ground by the tree line, and two huge moose in one of the many roadside marshes. They had no antlers, only oversized ears pointing off their enormous heads. They were a little too far away for pictures, and I didnt want to stick around and agitate them, so I kept going. Most of my animal sightings take place in the early morning; they must not like the higher traffic and heat of the afternoon. Ive also seen several white tail deer and a black bear around this time of day earlier this week.
The terrain heavily favours marshlands at the moment, trees and grasses emerging from shallow waters. With this territory comes even more bugs. Over the last few days, I have been constantly harrassed by countless bugs. I am covered in bites from species I dont even know the name of. And apparently my bug spray works on none of them. It is by no means the end of the world, but it is consistantly aggrevating. There is a picture below of a sculpture I saw in Upsala that pretty much sums it up.
The full 125 KM today went by uneventfully, climbing hills in the afternoon sun. The wind decided to come back for a visit; apparently it missed me, so progress was slow at times. I also broke my tire pump, so I will have to buy a new one in Thunder Bay tomorrow.
I pulled into Savanne River Resort Camp around 3 PM. Another short day to recover. The camp is a little bit run down, but its cheap, has most services, and I got to set up my tent right by the river. Tomorrow I will reach Thunder Bay, and hopefully I will get to stay at the house of a contact from Warm Showers.
