Today was an early rise, I was up before the sun, and watched it rise over the fields as I departed down the highway. It was still a gently glowing orb, like the coals of a well stocked fire. Its reflection was a firey pillar across the water of the river. Even at this hour I could feel the humidity, it was going to be a hot day.
I continued on in the relative cool of the morning, passing over many gentle hills through more wooded areas. I was really feeling how exhausted I am from the last few weeks, including yesterday's road ralley, so I was quite happy to take my time. As it slowly got warmer and warmer, I made my way through a plethora of small towns, including Massey, which I have vauge memories of from dad's racing career when we lived in Ontario.
By lunch it was scorching hot out, so I was more than happy to stop for a lunch break in Espanola, a small town located at the junction of HWY 6, where I needed to head to get to Mannitoulin Island. I saw a sign at a tourist stop for Oh Fudge, a supposedly world famous fudge maker, so I decided I wanted a piece....or five. There were numerous colourful and delicious looking varieties to choose from, so I ended up asking for two small slices, key word small. What I ended up with was a little shy of 1 pound, and the storekeeper informed me if that you by 1 pound you get half a pound free. Needless to say I left with a whopping 1.5 pounds of fudge. It is delicious. Ill have to do my best to resist eating it all today, lest I slip into a diabetic coma I wont recover from.
After lunch it was time to head down HWY 6 and onto Mannitoulin Island. The terrain began to become more aggressively hilly, and I was biking directly into the stiff wind now. Despite the cool wind, I was overheating and exhausted, so I was pretty anxious to get to Little Current so I could stop. This last 45 KM crawled by, as I faltered in the humid afternoon heat. It was rather scenic however, passing through more forested foothills and past inlets of Lake Huron, gleaming bright blue in the sun.
After an exceptionally long period of labouring, I finally made it to Little Current, ready to crash. I went to the grocery store to get chocolate milk and was dismayed to learn from the cashier that the nearest campground was over 10 KM away. I was quite unhappy about the extra distance, but it does make my ride to the ferry tomorrow that much shorter. I finally pulled into the campsite, in desperate need of a shower, food, and rest.
Tomorrow I take the ferry to Tobermorry, and by days end I will be 60 KM away from Meaford; awesome! I cant wait to finally take a break, I really need it.
